Hi all,
I managed to make the CBC Short Story Prize longlist this year. The 33 longlisted entries out of the 3000 submissions are located here: https://www.cbc.ca/1.5970008.
My individual page is here: https://www.cbc.ca/books/literaryprizes/titan-arum-by-trent-lewin-1.5976780
This is my third straight year being longlisted. Feeling awfully humbled and a little overwhelmed. But really happy. If you’d like to pop by and leave a comment or read the first few words of the story, please feel free. You can’t read the full story there. If you want to see my previous longlisted stories, they’re on this blog here:
Boston, D.C. (longlisted in 2019)
The Arms of Village (longlisted in 2020)

Congratulations Trent. Three years in a row? That is amazing. I will be holding out for you to make it all the way this year!
Appreciate it, Mary. Really do. Pretty crazy to get this far. Trying to stay level just now!
Congrats, Dude! I will stop by. Hopefully, third time is the charm.
Thanks, J. It’s not published in full on there, just first snippets. If it makes shortlist, it sees the light of day. I can only hope! Hope you’re doing well – always good to see you.
Congratulations, Trent! If the teasers are any indication, this is well deserved. I’m looking forward to that “light of day” when it gets short listed.
Thank you, Michelle. It’s the most personal, and I think the strongest, story I’ve entered. And it’s hopeful, so I hope people can read it.
Congratulations on your story making the longlist! And for getting there three years in a row, as well as getting shortisted one year — as mentioned on your CBC individual page. A curious source of inspiration for the story. Reminds me of listening to author interviews on YouTube, when many bring up the question they’re asked most frequently: “Where do you get your ideas?” As your inspiration shows, you’ve got to keep your eyes and ears and brain open. Best of luck on “Titan Arum” in the contest.
Yeah, I think inspiration for me is a curious thing. It sort of arrives and departs without taking its shoes off. I just try not to think too much about the writing – I write from some semblance of instinct, whatever that might be. And I have so many observations of the world and people that I feel fit to bursting with trying to get it out there.
Thank you for the comment, Dave, and for the well wishes. Here’s hoping! It really is a story I’m proud of, it’s a different style for me.
That is fantastic, Trent! No small achievement to make it three years in a row. You are obviously doing something right 🙂
Feels a bit crazy. I never know if I’m doing things right, I just feel my way through things.
I think you are. And there is no “right” way. Keep on feeling your way through. You’re inspiring!
No one on Earth deserves this more than you.
That is an awful nice comment, Fay. I don’t know if it’s true, but I’ll take it. Thank you. I split myself open on this story.
Congratulations!
Thank you, Katie!
Congrats, man! Best of luck!
Thanks so much, Walt. I’ll take that luck! There are many great writers in the competition.
Congratulations! What an accomplishment!
Thank you, Darla! It’s been a great experience.
